[Class 131] A method of curling hair consists in winding the lock of hair about the axis of one of the shanks of a hairpin and out of contact with the shank, and then engaging the lock of hair between the two shanks of the hairpin. One form of apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a tube 7, Fig. 2, secured to a handle 1, and a second hollow or channelled member 5 rotatable about. an enlargement 4 of the tube 7. A hair clamping member 6 is secured to the tube M. In operation, a hairpin H is inserted as shown in the members 5, 7, and the end of a lock of hair is clamped between the member 6 and the tube 7. The member 5 is then held in one hand and the handle 1 turned withtheother, whereby the hair is wound on to the tube 7. Finally the curling apparatus is removed leaving the lock of hair clamped between the two shanks of the hairpin. In a modified apparatus, Fig. 6, a spring actuated clamp 9 is pivoted at 10 to a hollow body 8 which may have longitudinal rows of perforations. The second member 14 has an extension 14a forming a pivot for the connected members 8, 9. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the hair is wound on a bifurcated rod 22 and a hollow member 23 is secured to a sleeve 24 which rotates on the handle 20 between a shoulder 20a thereon and a sleeve 21. The end of the lock of hair is inserted between the halves of the member 22, one of which halves is grooved to receive one shank of a hairpin.
