Description
Patented Aug. '10, 1937 UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to hair curlers of the type comprising acylindrical body around which aiock of hair may be wound in order to curl or wave the hair.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a hair curler comprising a cylindrical body having a slotted end to receive the end of a lock of hair to support the said end in order that the lock of hair may be wound around the curler body. In orderthat the curler may be removed from the hair after a lock has been wound around the same, the cylindrical body is formed in the nature of. a tube, or in other words, the cylindrical body is hollow so that after the hair has been wound around the curler one prong of a hairpin may be inserted into the cylindrical body while the other prong engages the outside of the roll of- Thus when the curler is slipped from the roll of hair the hairpin will hold the hair in a rolled condition; The particular type of hairpin employed is preferably of the type commonly known as a bobby pin in which the two prongs are united by a spring portion which resiliently holds the two prongs normally in engagement with each other. When the roll of hair which has previously been wound around the curler is I *removed from the curler 'body the hair pin acts to maintain the hair in a rolled condition and permits the same curler to be used to curl another .3 lock of hair so that any number of curls may be formed by the same curler.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a hair curler which may be used to provide curls or waves-of difierent sizes. To this end 35 the curler is provided with two tubular portions of g erentdiameters and-each tubular portion 11 s a'slot in the end thereof whereby the end of a strand of hair may be inserted therein and supported while the remainder of the lock of hair is wound around the curler. Whe1'1 one tubular portion is'being employed the other tubular portion functions asa handle and provides a convenient means for rotating the curler to wind the hair around the same and by alternatively using 5 the different tubular portions the hair is formed into rolls of different diameters with the result that difierent sized waves or curls may be formed.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a curler with tubular ends of different 50 diameters which may be inexpensively manufactured. To accomplish this object the invention forms the curler of two identical halves or sections which may be stamped from a metal blank ,5 and provides means for alining and holding said halves in a manner whereby there is little danger of hairs becoming snagged on the assembled parts of the curler. The means for holding the halves or sections together is illustrated in two forms,
in one form the means comprising a tubular element which is sleeved on the assembled halves of 5 the curler, the tubular element being formed from a metal blank by a drawing operation, and in the othen form the means comprises a tubular element which is stamped from a metal blank and rolled into tubular form. 10
With the above and other ends in view the invention is more fully disclosed with reference to the accompanying drawing in which- Figs. 1 and 2 are elevations of the curler;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the 15 line33ofFig,1;
Figs. 4 and 5 are sections taken respectively on lines 44, and 5-5 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a section of the curler with the securing means removed; 20
Fig. 7 is a section of the securing means;
Fig. 8 is an elevation of a modified securing means; I
Fig. 9 is a section taken on the line, 99 of Fig. 8, and
Fig. 10 is an end view of the modified securing means.
Like characters of reference are employed throughout to designate corresponding parts.
The present curler comprises a substantially cylindrical body having the end portions generally designated I and 2, the end portion I being 1 larger in diameter than the portionZ. The cylindrical body is formed of two semi-cylindrical halves 3 and 4 with a shoulder 5 between the two end portions l and 2. The edges of the sections .3 and 4 are recessed at 6 and 1 so that when the two halves are assembled together as illustrated in Fig. 6 the recesses 6 forma. slot 8 entering through one end of the body of the curler arid extending a substantial distance into the end portion I and the two recesses I form a slot 9 opening through the end of the portion 2 and extending a substantial distance into the same. Shoulders 10 are formed at the ends of the recesses '6 and shoulders I I are formed at the ends of the recesses 1, the shoulders l0 and II being spaced on opposite sides of the shoulders 5. The recesses 6 and l are formed at their ends whereby each slot 8 and 9 has an enlarged mouth 12.
In order to secure the two halves together after they have been assembled as illustrated in Fig. 6, the invention provides a tubular body I3 having a shoulder [4 intermediate its ends and adapted for engagement with the shoulder 5 when the erably formed by a drawing operation and has a small diameterportion l adapted to fit snug- 5 1y over the end portion 2 and a large diameter portion l6 adapted to fit over the end portion 3.-
Diametrlcally extending across the opening in the end of the small diameter portion I5 is a web 9'8 and at the otherend of the element l3 are provided two diametrically opposite prongs l8.
When the element i3 is slipped over the end portion 2 of the curler the web I! extends into the slots 9 and at the time the shoulder it engages the shoulders 5 the web portion I! will contact with the shoulders il. When the element I3 is thus positioned the prongs l8 are'bent inwardly so that they extend through the slots B and into engagement with the shoulders H. The element i3 is thus held against movement with respect to the halves 3 and ti and the halves are held against movement with respect to one another.
In the form shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10 the element l9 which is adapted to hold the two halves of a curler together in the manner above described, is formed by stamping a properly shaped piece of metal from a sheet metal blank and then rolling it into cylindrical form as shown. The
element It has a shoulder 20 intermediate its ends and prongs 2i and 22 at opposite ends respectively which are adapted to be bent into slots such as described above at 8 and 9 respectively.
In using the present curler the end of a lock of hair is slipped into the slot 8 while the curler is held by the end portion 2. The curler is then revolved a couple of times in order to provide a couple of turns of hair around the same and is then pulled so as to tighten the turns of hair and then the remainder of the lock of hair is wound around the portion 8. When the lock of hair has been completely wound around the portion I a bobby pin has one prong inserted within the portion 9 and the other prong extended over the outside of the roll of hair. The curler is "then pulled lengthwise from the roll of hair and the hobby pin functions to hold the roll against unwinding. Due to the fact that the portion 2 is of smaller diameter than the portion I repeating the same operation by winding the lock of hair around portion 2 will result in a roll of .hair being formed which is smaller in diameter than the one formed on the portion l, and therefore a difierent sized wave or roll will result.
Although specific embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described it will be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention and such changes are contemplated.

2. A hair curler comprising a tubular body formed of two substantially semi-cylindrical halves, said halves having complemental recesses at each end forming slots, in each end of said body, said slots terminating at points in the length of said body spaced from the center of said body whereby to form opposed shoulders, a tubular element received on said body, and means on opposite ends of said tubular element engaging respective shoulders to retain saidtubular element on said body whereby it holds said halves together;
3.
