Abstract

466,106. Fluid - actuated valves. CREAMERY PACKAGE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., YATES, H., and PAGE. A. E. Nov. 15, 1935, No. 31643. [Class 135] [Also in Groups VI and XXXVII] In the pasteurizing apparatus for liquids set forth in Specification 466,105, [Group VI], the operation of a means for supplying the cold liquid and a pumping means for discharging the pasteurized liquid from the pasteurizing vessels are controlled by a single pneumatic master valve A in a.ssociation with pneumatic distribution valves B. for controlling the filling and discharging of the individual pasteurizing vessels, said distribution valves B being operated in sequence by a timing mechanism. Each of the vessels has a valve for controlling the supply and a valve for controlling the discharge of the milk, the supply control valve of one pasteurizing vessel which is ready for filling being paired with the discharge control valve of the vessel which at the timed sequence of operations is ready for emptying, In the construction described a control knob 11, Fig. 5, mounted on a spindle 18 is turned when the timing mechanism which is constructed as set forth in Specification 466, 107, is adjusted for commencing a pasteurizing operation, a slot 46a in a disc 46 driven by the synchronous motor which operates the timing mechanism being then in register with a projection 18d on an arm 18c on spindle 18 and permitting rotation of spindle 18 so that a blade spring 18b secured to an arm 18a thereon opens a ball valve 15 to admit compressed air through passage 14a into the master valve A which is simultaneously cut off from the atmosphere by the closing of a cone valve 16 which is connected by a stem 17 with valve 15. The hollow interior of valve A communicates through passage 14b with the pneumatic device controlling the switch of the motor of the cold milk pump which is then actuated and with valves B, Fig. 3, which control the distribution of air to the pneumatic devices for operating the valves for filling and discharging the holding compartments. The valves B are arranged around a cam disc 25, one for each pair of filling and discharging valves which are operated so that the filling valve of one holder is opened at the same time as the discharging valve of another holder which is to be emptied. The filling and discharge valves, which may be of the kind set forth in Specification 466,108 are operated each by a piston 40, Fig. 10b, actuated in a cylinder 39 by pneumatic pressure under control of the valves B, the opening taking place against resistance of a spring 40a, the rod 41 of the piston 40 being connected by a link 42 to a toggle linkage 43, 44 one end of which is anchored to a fixed point and the other end attached to the stem of the filling or discharge valve. Each valve B comprises a lever 26, Fig. 3, having a nose 26a co-operating with the cam disc 25, a rod 27, the other end of which contacts with a ball valve 28 controlling the supply of compressed air from valve A to the chamber 31 of valve B, bearing against one end of lever 26, the other end of which contacts with a rod 29 whereby a ball valve 30 is normally maintained open to relate chamber 31 to the atmosphere. The disc 25 at a definite time rocks lever 26 so as to allow closing of valve 30 and to open valve 28. The disc 25 is rotated by a constant speed motor the switch 37, Fig. 10a, of which is pneumatically actuated by a ball 34 which normally remains in contact with a stop 35 in an inclined bore 33 which is in communication with the valve A through a pipeline 38. When compressed air is admitted into the system the ball 34 is moved up the bore 33 and bears on a contact carrying blade 36 to close the switch. The hot milk pump is brought into operation after an interval determined by the timing mechanism when a cam 24, Fig. 6, on disc 46 lifts a latch 22 which permits a piston 19 in valve A to move in opposition to a spring 23 and allow compressed air to pass through passage 14c, Fig. 5, to the pneumatic device for actuating the switch of the hot milk pump motor.
