Abstract

A sound-record carrier for the electro-magnetic recording and reproduction of sound by magnetic action on magnetizable bodies, according to the known process suggested by Poulsen, consists of a powdery magnetic metal oxide in a finely divided state on or in a non-magnetic carrier material. The oxides Fe3O4 and g --Fe2O3 are especially suitable, and may be prepared by the decomposition of complex metal salts, for example iron-ammonium salts, or complex organic metal compounds such as pyridine compounds. The decomposition may be carried out in the non-magnetic carrier material before or after the casting of the mass into a film. In one example, colloidal g --Fe2O3.H2O is precipitated by blowing air into an aqueous solution of tetrapyridine ferrous chloride, decanted, filtered, heated to 150 DEG C., in a current of dry air, made into a paste with a solution of acetyl cellulose in acetone, and the emulsion applied to a film of acetyl cellulose by means of a film-casting machine. Four other examples are described.
