[Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group X] Machine parts and constructional elements, having apertures such as drilled holes which are stressed by outside forces, have further apertures, slots, or inserts of another material on one or both sides of the main hole interrupting the continuity of the material taking the main stresses, and lying in the direction in which the force is applied to the member, the interruptions tapering or diminishing in size in the direction away from the main aperture. The lines of force in the material are thus prevented from crowding together near the main aperture. Holes 5, 6, Fig. 2, are formed on either side of the main hole 2 in a rod 1, the diameter or width of the holes decreasing outwardly from the hole 2. A slot 10, Fig. 5, of semi-oval form is provided adjacent the hole adapted to receive a pin 9, in a link 1. The slot 10 may be formed by drilling two holes at the ends of the slot which is then cut by a saw or burner. The holes may be joined by longitudinal slots, or the auxiliary holes may be replaced by.a longitudinal slot. The holes may be filled with cement, solder, or other material to prevent rusting. A filling which will transmit the strain but not adhere to the walls of the aperture may be employed in a reciprocating thrust rod, or other member for the transmission of alternate tension and compression. The material between the slots 10 and the main aperture may be removed and replaced by a piece of another material. In a further modification, the aperture 2 may be drilled in an oval piece of another material which has been inserted in a hole in the main member.
