Abstract
465,131. Controlling aircraft. VICKERS (AVIATION), Ltd., PIERSON, R. K., and FIRMAN, R. A. Nov. 1, 1935, No. 30206. [Class 4] Means for adjusting trimming devices for aircraft flying controls in which small auxiliary surfaces are fitted to a main control surface, comprise a setting lever mounted for adjustment in two different directions, two separate mechanisms, one actuated by adjustment of the setting lever in one direction and the other by adjustment of the lever in the other direction and connections operatively connecting the mechanisms with the respective trimming devices. As shown, a spindle a provided with a knob a<1> is rotatable in a cross-head b integral with trunnions b<1>, b<2> mounted in plates c, c<1>. The crosshead b has arms b<3>, b<4> carrying drums d, d<1>, d<2>, d<3>. The drums d<2>, d<3> are adjusted in opposite directions upon rotation of the knob a' through bevel gearing e, e<1>, e<2>. The drums d, d<1> are adjusted in opposite directions upon fore- and-aft movement of the spindle a by a pinion g engaging a fixed arcuate rack f<1> and a pinion d<5> engaging teeth on the two drums. Each pair of drums d, d<1> and d<2>, d<3> are connected respectively to gear for adjusting the auxiliary surfaces on the rudder and elevator. This gear comprises a lever i<6> which receives at one end a projection on the auxiliary surface and at the other end comprises a nut i<5> which engages a screwed spindle i' connected to drum i<2>, i<3> operated from the drums d, d<1> and d<2>, d<3>. The pinion d<5> may be dispensed with in which case two fixed racks are provided. Movement of the various mechanisms may be limited by limitation of the number of teeth.
