Abstract

Chrome tanned leather, previously to drying and for the purpose of rendering it easily susceptible to "wetting back," is treated with a substantially neutral polyhydroxy compound containing at least one ether group or a polyether compound which may or may not contain free hydroxyl groups. Suitable substances are condensation products of carbohydrates with ethylene oxide, p polyethylene oxide itself (cf. Specification 346,550), polyglycerols, condensation products of substances containing hydroxy or amino groups with ethylene oxide, polyethenoxyurea (cf. Specifications 420,137 and 432,356) and fatty derivatives of such bodies, e.g. polyethenoxy dimethylolurea stearate; polyglycerol stearate prepared by heating oleic acid with an excess of glycerol and an alkaline catalyst; stearylmethylglucamine polyethylene glycol ether (cf. Specification 420,518), methylglucoside polyethylene glycol ether prepared by inter-action of a -methyl glucoside with ethylene oxide in presence of a trace of caustic soda; condensation product of monohydric alcohols such as cetylalcohols &c. with ethylene oxide (cf. Specification 380,431) or condensation products of cod oil with ethylene oxide (cf. Specification 434,424). According to examples leather is treated with: 1. A solution of cane sugar ethylene oxide condensation product prepared by condensing sugar with ethylene oxide in the presence of caustic soda under pressure; 2. A solution of polyethylene glycol prepared by condensing ethylene glycol with ethylene oxide in presence of caustic soda under pressure; 3. A solution of polyglycerol, or polyglycerol esters prepared by esterifying polyglycerol with the acid or acid anhydride, or in the case of higher fatty acid directly from glycerol and the acid as described in German Specification 575,911; 4. A solution of polyethenoxyurea or polyethenoxydimethylol urea or its stearate; 5. A solution of stearmethylglucamine polyethylene glycol ether or methyl glucoside polyethylene glycol ether; 6. A solution of cod oil ethylene oxide condensation product; 7. A solution of a substance known under the trade name of Emulphor O, presumed to have the constitution C12H25(OC2H4)n.OH.
