[Class 100 (ii)] An intaglio printing-machine employing ink having a volatile solvent is constructed so that the printing and impression cylinders and the inking mechanism comprising a trough 8 and doctor 9 are completely enclosed in a casing 10, which does not extend substantially beyond the frame of the machine, and is preferably located within the frame. As applied to a web machine, guide or feed rollers 4, 5 are provided for the web 3, and packing is provided between a part of the periphery of each guide roller and the upper part of the casing 10, the web passing through narrow air gaps between the rollers and the casing. The journals 26, 27 of the impression cylinder 1 and printing-cylinder 6 are kept gas-tight by means of stuffing-boxes 17, 18, and to permit displacement of the bearings 24 of the impression cylinder in slots in the machine frame 2, the walls 16 of the casing 10 are provided with slots 20 and which are closed by spring-pressed cover plates 19 provided with packing strips 21. The casing 10 is fitted with windows and with closable flaps 11, 12, and the portions of the casing adjacent the rolls 3, 4 are made removable to permit insertion of the web. The casing may be filled with an inert gas, and a suction outlet 15 is provided which may lead to a plant for recovery of the vapour. The invention may be applied to sheet-fed machines, and more than one printing unit may be arranged in one casing. Drying devices may be fitted adjacent to the casing 10, and the guide rollers 4, 5 may be formed so as to emit streams of compressed air. Suction devices may be fitted adjacent to the rollers 4, 5 for drawing off vapours of the solvent.
