Abstract

464,704. Tea - withering. LORNIE, J. S. Nov. 25, 1935, No. 32659. [Class 34 (ii)] The leaf to be withered is spread on three or more superimposed surfaces formed of a continuous flexible band adapted to be traversed and forming a rack of surfaces, all the surfaces travelling simultaneously as the spreading proceeds, the leaf being spread on some of the surfaces from one end of the rack and on the remaining surfaces from the other end of the rack, after which movement is discontinued and the leaf is withered, being subsequently discharged. In the construction shown, a continuous length of canvas 1 is supported in zigzag fashion on rollers 2, 3 to form a rack of spaced superimposed withering surfaces on which tea is to be spread. The two ends of the canvas are connected to chains 8 which pass round sprockets 9 to a driving sprocket 10. Sprockets 11 are engaged by the chains to drive the rollers 2, and idler sprockets 12 are provided which may be adjusted to alter the tension of the chains. Each horizontal surface of the rack is provided with a slope at each end, and rotary spreaders 24 are provided whereby the tea as it ascends the slopes is spread out uniformly. The arrangement is such that when the driving sprocket 10 and the spreaders 24 are set in operation, the tea is spread on the horizontal surfaces from both ends of the rack, one set of alternate surfaces being supplied from the other end. When the available surface is covered with tea, the movement of the canvas and spreaders is stopped to enable withering of the tea to take place, after which the canvas moves in a reverse direction to discharge the withered tea. The spreaders consist each of a square shaft to which four paddles are fixed. Trays 37 are provided on each side of the rack of surfaces, these trays being pivoted and counterweighted so that they may be tipped up or down to feed or discharge the tea to or from the canvas 1.
