Abstract

464,504. Respiratory appliances. NYMAN, S., and WEIN, P. July 17, 1935, No: 20360. [Class 81 (ii)] A protective respiratory appliance comprises a windowed flexible mask 1 having opposite the mouth an exhalation valve 16, and an inhalation opening connected by a tube 7 with a filter canister 5 secured to the mask immediately in front of the exhalation valve casing. The valve 16 comprises a centrally apertured disc, preferably corrugated, and clamped around its periphery between two apertured dished plates 13, 14, by a central bolt 21. A plate 17, also held by the bolt, forms a seating for the valve. The tube 7 is clamped to the mask by screw rings 8, 9, and may be flexible or, as shown, rigid and formed integral with the canister 5. The canister has a perforated cover 10 supporting a disc-form inhaling valve 11, and is secured to the exhaling valve casing by a band 19 contractible by a screw 20 and attached to the bolt 21. Gauze 12 within the canister may support a layer of flannel, cotton wool or like fibrous material l surmounted by a chemical purifying material l<1>, and a second filtering layer l<2> comprising cotton wool and metal gauze or fabric netting.
