Abstract
464,434. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and RULE, W. Oct. 18, 1935, No. 28847. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XIII] Circuits 13, 14 containing lamp filaments or other consuming devices (not shown) are alternately closed by successive actuations of a switch 2 through the medium of a device comprising two bimetallic strips 6, 7 which are heated by conductors 3, 4 and are adapted tc make contact alternately with a strip 10 arranged between them. The strips 6, 7 are each made of two portions oppositely directed so that variations of ambieni temperature are compensated for and the portion 9 of each strip opposite the heater 3 or 4 is dulled while the remaining portion 8 is brightened. When the switch 2 is closed a circuit is completed through both heaters 3 and 4 and the strips 6, 7 bend towards each other till one strip, the strip 6 in the figure, engages the strip 10. This closes the circuit 13 and short-circuits the heater 4 so that the strip 7 cools, but the heating of the strip 6 continues and this bends further to the left carrying the strip 10, which is non-resilient, with it. When the switch 2 is opened, the strip 10 is thus left nearer the strip 7 so that when the switch 2 is again closed, and the strips 6, 7 again bend towards each other, the strip 7 will now be the first to engage the strip 10, and short circuit the heater 3 through the lamp filament in the conductor 14.
