Abstract

464,426. Folding edges of sheet material. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. Oct. 18, 1935, No. 28789. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1934. [Class 42 (i)] [Also in Group XI] In a machine for folding the margins of sheet material, the thermoplastic cement on the French binding is softened by an electrically heated finger 20 which contacts with the marginal portion of the work, and serves as a gauge. A second shielded electric heater 132 has a projecting hot point 138 for softening the cement on parts that have to be hand folded, and also an arm 150 for conveying heat to the presser foot 16. The machine shown is of the kind described in Specification 208,217, [Class 42 (i)]. The presser foot is resiliently carried in a lever provided with a thumb-piece 112 and pivoted on a pin 44. The finger 20 is carried by a lever 48 provided with a thumb piece 50 and is pivoted also on the pin 44. The finger 20 is heated by the passage of current through it ; its two legs 62 are clamped by a screw 82 and nut 88 in two blocks 66 secured to the head 58 of a pin 56 fixed in the lever 48, suitable insulating parts being interposed.
