Abstract
In order to prevent incrustation on the blades of turbines driven by steam produced therefrom water is so treated that the constituents of the residue remaining on evaporation are such that the whole or the major part of the residue solidifies outside of the working temperature range of the turbine. The water may be treated, as by the addition of an alkali hydroxide, so that the residue solidifies below the lowest working temperature of the turbine. Alternatively the water may be treated so that the residue is solid at the highest working temperature. Thus water containing sodium carbonates and sodium hydroxide is treated with acids or acid salts, for example sulphuric acid or sodium bisulphate. If an alkaline-reacting residue is desired, boric acid, phosphoric acid, mono- or di-sodium phosphate or phosphorus penta-chloride may be used. Acids which will bind oxygen, for example sulphurous or phosphorous acid, may also be used. Or acids or salts, such as chromic acid or sodium bichromate, which will diminish corrosion by their passivation effect, may be used.
