[Class 108 (i)] In a road vehicle a cover hingedly mounted at the rear end so as to extend forwardly to cover a selected part of the vehicle is slidably connected to a movable roof which is shaped to conform to the shape of the cover so as to be telescopically contained within or upon the cover when the vehicle is in the open position. As shown in Fig. 2, the cover 12 is housed in the rear part of the body, being connected thereto by spring-loaded links 20 and the roof member 13 is adapted to be nested beneath it, the cover 12 and roof 13 having co-operating guiding means 17, 19. To elevate the cover and roof, chains 30 are carried by sprockets in the body and fingers 31 thereon are engaged by brackets 32 so that when the chain 30 is driven from the gear-box through shafts 25, 26, the cover and roof member are raised and then the roof member is moved forwardly into its erected position. Hinged flaps 34 on the roof 13 serve to close gaps between the roof member and the cover 12. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement wherein the cover 40 is first raised by means of screws 49 and nuts 48, the roof 41 being finally moved forwardly by chain 38 operated from a pinion 50 slidably splined on the screw 49. In Fig. 10, the cover is carried at the lower end by levers and is pivoted at 85 to the side extensions 86 carried by the doors. The side extensions 86 are elevated by means of screws 87 causing nuts 94 together with rods 95 until when the extensions 86 are in their raised positions, pinions 96 on the rods 95 engage pinions 99 on the screws so causing the rod to rotate. Pinions on the upper ends of the rods then engage with chain sprockets to operate the chain 102 carrying the sliding roof which is rolled as the roller 102c. Fig. 15 shows an arrangement in which the side members 129 are elevated by means of screws 138 and the roof which is flexible is guided in the side members. Means are provided comprising chains 149 and locks whereby the roof cannot be operated until the doors are closed. The windscreen 137 is also adapted to be raised and lowered and the various operations are adapted to be performed in sequence from the gear box 133 and associated shafts and gears.
