Abstract

463,939. Rolling; winding. WILLIAMS, W. P. (American Rolling Mill Co.) Aug. 17, 1936, No. 5596/37. Divided application. [Class 83 (iv)] After rolling a metal strip 29. back and forth through a mill 47 by coilers 27 and 61 the strip is severed at the coil 61 to leave the trailing portion of the strip still threaded through the mill and held by the pinch rolls 31 so that the leading end of a succeeding unrolled coil 11 can be attached to the unrolled trailing end of the previous coil when repeated rolling back and forth can proceed as follows : Before rolling, the individual sheets are led from a coil 2 between straightening rolls 3, each end is sheared square at 5 and then welded end to end at 6. They then pass before a flash cutter 7 of pinchroll 8 and are coiled up at 11. This now-continuous strip is threaded round tensioning rollers 32 and the static tensioning roller 40 and through the mill 47 to the other static tensioner 52 and the end is fixed on the tight coiler 61. The strip is now rolled from left to right until its trailing end is just held by the pinch rolls 30, 31 when the mill is reversed and dropping of the deflector plate 28 directs the strip into a coiler 27 provided with an outside sheath of roller chain 18 tightened by a weight 26 to press the strip against the drum 27, which thereby frictionally grips it and coils it up. The strip is then rolled to-and-fro and finally wound upon the drum 27 or on the tight coiler 61 and severed when the coiler 61 is then swung round a pivot 58 through 180‹, so bringing another tight coiler 62 into position for rolling the next strip while the first rolled strip at the same time can be led away to a storage coiler 70 or a shears. The initial unrolled length of the first strip on coil 61 is waste. The trailing end held by the pinch rolls 30 is welded to a new supply strip which has meantime been accumulated on the reel 9 and so pulls and threads the new strip through for repeated rolling as before. The tight coilers 61 or 62 are driven through a clutch from a motor while the coiler frame is turned through 180‹ by a separate swing motor.
