Abstract

463,815. Cycle &c. frames. BATES, H. T. Nov. 30, 1935, No. 33221. [Class 136 (iii)] In order to strengthen cycle and like frames and reduce the tendency to vibration, they are constructed wholly or in part of tubes having an internally and externally cylindrical portion between their ends which is of greater external diameter than the rest of the tube, the wall thickness of such intermediate portion being also increased if desired. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the tube has an intermediate cylindrical part 1 and end parts 2 of gradually decreasing diameter. The parts 2 may increase in wall thickness towards the ends, e.g. as the result of their shaping in a rotary swaging machine. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the part 3 of larger diameter is joined to the smaller end parts 5 by tapered parts 4. As shown in Fig. 3, the tube may have the same inner diameter throughout, the larger intermediate part 6 having a greater wall thickness than the rest of the tube ; or the part of increased wall thickness may have a larger or smaller internal diameter than the rest of the tube. The diameter of the tube may be reduced towards the ends in a number of steps.
