[Class 97 (ii)] A body D having unequal principal moments of inertia, e.g. a disc, ring, cylinder, or chain, is supported in a frame B and drawn in rapid rotation by a flexible filar suspension F attached to the body D at a point outside the major principal axis of inertia. The body D rotates about its major principal axis and the latter takes up a vertical position. The filar suspension F is attached at the top to the spindle C of a motor M which is mounted by gimbals S in the frame B. Deviations of the frame B from the vertical may be determined by observing the departures of the image in a mirror N of a mark P at the centre of the body D from alignment with a point Q marked on the mirror N. Photo-electric cells may be utilized to adapt the device for use with automatic stabilizing apparatus.
