Abstract

462,440. Treating glass surfaces. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 4,1936, No. 21450. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1935. [Class 56] [Also in Group XL] A method of rendering glass resistant to attack by metal vapour consists in coating it with a film of alkali oxide, alkaline earth oxide, or alumina. Preferably, the coating is composed of the oxide of the metal from which the glass is to be protected. The film may be formed by bringing the glass into contact with the vapour of the metal, and then heating the glass until a diffusion of the metal into, and absorption by, the surface of glass takes place. Finally, the deposited metal is oxidized, e.g. by supplying an atmosphere containing oxygen to the glass. A glass consisting of 60 per cent of silica, 20 per cent of sodium oxide, 10 per cent of calcium oxide, and 10 per cent of boron trioxide may be rendered suitable for the envelope of a sodium metal vapour lamp. Similarly, a glass consisting of 57 per cent of silica, 20 per cent of calcium oxide, and 23 per cent of alumina may be rendered suitable for use as a magnesium vapour discharge tube. Barium and beryllium oxides can be used also for the coating. Specification 455,945 is referred to.
