Abstract

461,186. Controlling brakes. SIM. MONDS, A. E., and REUNERT & LENZ. Ltd. Aug. 6, 1935, No. 22162. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] Means for controlling the speed or deceleration of engines &c. comprises a governor mounted on a driving shaft and driven through a freewheel device and co-operating with a second governor fixed on the same or another shaft in such a way that upon decrease of the speed of the second governor due to retardation of the driving shaft the relative motion that ensues between the weights of the two governors is used for controlling the brakes of the engine &c. The driving disc 16 of a centrifugal governor A is driven from the shaft 1 through a ratchet or freewheel device and the driving disc 6 of a governor B is secured to the shaft. The weight-carrying links 8, 18 of the governors are connected respectively to collars 10, 20 which engage non-rotatable anti-friction bearings 14, 24 slidable on the shaft. Collars 26, 27 secured to these bearings are connected by links 33, 34 to a part slidable on a lever 30 pivoted at 29. The governor A may be provided with fan blades 43 or other auxiliary retarding means. If the engine and shaft 1 are running at uniform speed, the collars 26, 27 are equidistant from a stop 37 and the lever is vertical as shown, but if the engine is retarded the collar 27 of governor A lags relatively to the collar 26 of governor B in its movement toward the stop 37 since the governor A is retarded only by the fan blades 43. The consequent displacement of the lever 30 may be used to control a relay or the valve of a servo-motor having a " follow-up " action whereby the action of a brake on the engine &c. is moderated. The retarding device for the governor A may, instead of the blades 43, be a band brake, an, eddy-current brake or an oil pump delivering through a spring-loaded relief valve or through a valve providing a restricted passage controlled by the lever 30, so that the energy absorbed is proportional to the displacement of the lever. To prevent the device from affecting the brakes if it is deranged, in which case the lever 30 assumes an inclined position, a pendulum 39 may be hung on the lever as shown, and may have a hole 42 which is entered by a pin on the engine brake lever when this lever is moved to apply the brakes, only if the lever 30 is vertical, the pin for instance, closing the circuit of a relay by which the device is rendered operative.
