Abstract
460,706. Automatic guns. DARNE, R. June 28, 1935, No. 18550. Convention date, June 29, 1934. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to cartridge-feed, mechanism for automatic guns of the kind described in Specification 265,105, [Class 92 (ii)], in which a gas-operated action-slide 1 carries a pivoted gripper 5 for extracting a cartridge 4 from a belt disposed beneath the barrel and raising it into line with the breech with the aid of a further pivoted member 9 which supports the front of the cartridge. According to the invention, the parts 5a, 5b which grip the rear of the cartridge engage the extraction groove thereof and contact with faces 7a, 7b on the fixed casing to prevent displacement of the cartridge due to shock when the buffer 3a is struck. The gripper 5 is retained in the raised position shown by a spring 8 engaging a notch 5c, the spring being released by a cam surface 9b on the member 9 when this member strikes a pin 10 during the forward loading movement. Before this release, the cartridge is stopped by the chamber in an inclined position, an incline 6a on a tumbler 6 then raising the rear end of the cartridge into position to be engaged by the tilting breech block 2. The tumbler 6 is pivotally mounted on a lever 14 itself pivoted to the gripper 5 and its beak supports the rear end of the cartridge during extraction from the belt. A member 11 engaging the stop 10 to limit the forward movement is slidably carried by a pivoted member 12. After removing the breech block, the member 12 is raised to permit removal of the member 5 and parts carried thereby. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also (1) with reference to Fig. 8 (Cancelled) a readily dismountable cam device 29 on the upper surface of the action slide 1 for imparting transverse reciprocating movement to the cartridge-belt feedslide 56. The cam device includes a projection 29b actuating a system of rods 27, 30, 26 during rearward movement of the slide 1 and a projection 29a for actuating the system in the reverse direction during forward movement of the slide ; (2) with reference to Fig. 6 (Cancelled), a device for preventing a doublefeed from the cartridge belt comprising a lever 57 pivoted to the belt feed-slide 56 and engaging the cartridge pocket 51 of the belt so that, only when a cartridge has been withdrawn, can the lever 57 rise to bring the belt feed-pawl 55 into feeding position. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
