[Class 5 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] A battery cage for laying fowls, chicken rearing, fattening &c. is adapted to be erected without the use of tools and comprises transverse frames 4, Fig. 2, provided with reticulated material 6, and longitudinal frames, Fig. 3, the uprights 3 of which are notched at 2 to engage with the notched parts 1 of the horizontal bars of the transverse frames 4. The transverse frames hold the longitudinal frames in position and are themselves spaced by perforated longitudinal bars 7, Fig. 12, adapted to receive the projecting ends of the uprights of the frames 4. The structure is covered with wirework panels 10, Fig. 12, secured by turn buttons 13. Egg trays having a reticulated sloping bottom 19, Fig. 10, secured to a wooden frame 20 or to collapsable wire lattice sides, are held in the compartments by resting at one end on projections 25 of the frames 3, the projecting ends of bars 22 or wires of the egg trays being supported in brackets 23 on the uprights of the transverse frames 4. Droppings trays detachably connected together as described in Specification 442,656 are arranged beneath the egg trays. Water troughs rest in brackets provided with wires 16 resting on the egg trays, while feeding troughs are provided with slotted metal plates 14 by which they may be hung on screws 15, Figs. 2 and 12. Access is had to the fowls by the removal of bars passing through screw eyes 17 arranged in the uprights of the transverse frames. Certain of the screw eyes 18, Fig. 9, are provided with a rod 35 attached to its head. By turning the eye by means of the rod 35, the bar passing through the eyes can be gripped to prevent its longitudinal movement.
