459,877. Boot - making machines. MELLERIO, L. P., 160, Belgrave Road, Leicester.-(Barge Electric Shoe Cement Press, Inc. ; 29, Ryerson Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) July 17, 1935, No. 20337. [Class 17 (i)] Sole-laying.-A shoe bottom pressing apparatus adapted for use on ladies' shoes wherein a sole and heel breast flap are secured by adhesive, has work pressing means movable directly by an operator, for forcing a shoe against a pad, resilient means for retaining the work under pressure and means for heating fluid contained in a sole engaging pad arranged externally of the fluid-containing member. A base 1 is filled with liquid by an orifice closed by a plug 11, the liquid being retained by a rubber diaphragm 3 provided with a leather covering. The end of the base is open so that the diaphragm may engage the heel breast. The work is held under pressure by a bail 33 secured to the base by springs 35 and engaging one of a number of notches 31 in a lever 21 provided with a latch 27 co-operating with one of a number of notches 29 in a lever 13 carrying adjustable heel and toe abutments for the last. These abutments are held against swing by sleeves 47 screwed into bifurcated portions of the abutments and surrounding push pins which selectively engage holes 39. The liquid is heated by an electric resistance 57, the current being controlled by a thermostat 61. The plug 11 is of lowfusible metal, which melts if the liquid becomes too hot. The chamber containing the heating devices may project into the liquid. The apparatus stands on feet 65.
