This invention relates to apparatus for attaching bottoms to shoes, and more particularly to apparatus of this type for use in cementing orv otherwise adhesively attaching, leather, or other soles to shoes, boots or the like, wherein the lasted portions of shoes or the like and the soles to be securedl thereto have been previously coated with an adhesive and are then subjected to pressure Within the apparatus until the cement or other adhesive has set.
Another object of the invention is to provide apparatus of this type adapted to support the shoe or the like upon flexible cushion during the cementing operation, the cushion being constructed to apply pressure uniformly and evenly upon the shoe bottom and around the edges of the sole or the like to be attached to the shoe.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a handy and convenient portable half-sole cementing apparatus for use by shoe repairers as well as shoe manufacturers,

The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read inconnect-ion with the accompanying drawings which form part of the application, with not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims. l

Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description thereof, and at first to Figs. 1 and 2, the numeral 5 indicates a hollow base member which contains a rubber cushion or bag (i, which of course may be of other flexible material which, preferably, is
adapted to hold water. The top of the flex ible bag 6 is covered with a piece of flexible material 7, such as leather, for example, in order to protect the rubber bag. A holding strip 8, secured to the base 5 by means of screws 9, lies on the leather piece 7, running around the edge of the same to hold it in place. The "mentioned fiexible bag may be filled with air or other gaseous substances but is preferably filled with a liquid, such as water for example, numeral 10 being employed to indicate the body of liquid. An inlet 12 closed by a plug 13 is provided in the base 5 and the fiexible bag so that liquid may be put into and withdrawn from the flexible bag. 'The latterforms a yieldable or displaceable rest for the shoe 14 conforming to the shape of the bottom ofthe shoe. An electrical heating element 16 enclosed in a water-tight tube 17 is provided Within the flexible cushion or bag so that the water within the same may be heated, hot water acat 26 at the distal end of the bell crank lever and is adapted to engage in notches 27 formed in the swingable member 20, said latch moving upwardly from notch to notch as the bell crank lever 21 is manually pressed down in the proximal or working end. The mentioned bell crank lever is provided with notches :28, in any one of which may be placed a loop 29 to the ends of which are connected spring coils 30, said springs being secured to the. mentioned strip 8 by means of eyelets 31. The swingable member 2O is provided with apertures 33 adjacent the lower edge thereof so that socket members 34 and 35 may be adjustably and pivotally secured to the same by means of screws 36 and 37, respectively. Said socket members threadedly and there- 'fore adjustably respectively receive pressure members 38 and 39, the former bearing on the front part of the shoe and the latter fitting into a shoe form 40. The pressure member 38 carries a soft pad 4l so that a shoe will not be damaged. It is evident from the foregoing that the farther down the lever 21 is pressed, the greater will be the pressure on the shoe on account of the stretching of the spring coils 30.
The form of the apparatus shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 except that the socket members 34 and 35 are moved farther to the right in order to respectively bear on the lshoe in the shoe form, which is so positioned that only the front part of the sole bears on the cushion, the shoe being placed in this position when a new half-sole is being put on the shoe, the base in this form of the invention being shorter than the base shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and being designated by the characterv 5a. The base 5a is differently formed than the base 5 at the rear part thereof, being curved downwardly at the rear end in order to fit into the shank ofthe shoe and the strip 8a, which corresponds in function to the strip 8 in Figs. 1 and 2, corresponds in form to the rear end of the base 5a.
Instead of supplying warm or hot Water to the cushion I may supply a warm or hot gaseous substance, such for example as warm or hot air or steam either by preheating before introduction into the cushion or heating by means of the electrical heater shown and described. V
lVhat is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a base member, a flexible cushion carried by said base member, spring means for exerting pressure on a shoe positioned on the cushion, means including a hand operable lever to tension the spring pressure means, and means acted upon by said pressure means for distributing the pressure over the length of the shoe, the pressure on the entire shoe being exerted solely by the tensioned spring pressure means.
2. A shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a hollow base member, a flexible cushion carried by said base member, a pressure distributing member pivotally mounted on said base member and provided with means for engaging with a shoe to hold the same in position on the cushion, a bell-crank lever pivota'lly mounted on said pressure distributing member, spring lpressure means connected to said base memer 'and adapted to be put under tension by actuation of said bell-crank lever, and means for maintaining said spring pressure means under tension.
3. An apparatus as set'forth in claim 2, wherein the bell-crank lever is mounted intermediate the ends of the pressure distributing member and is formed with a short arm for actuating the spring pressure means and a long arm extending beyond the edge of the apparatus.
4. A shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a hollow base member, a`lexible cushion carried by said base member, a pressure distributing member pivotally mounted on said base member and provide with means for engaging with a shoe to hold the same in position on the cushion, a bell-crank lever pivotally mounted on said pressure distributing member and being formed with a series of notches, a pair of tension springs attached at opposite sides to the base member and connected together by a bail adapted for selective location in any one of said notches so that the springs may be placed under different degrees of tension by a uniform rocking of the bell-crank lever about its pivot, and means for maintaining said springs under any set degree of tension.
5. A shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a hollowbase member, a flexible cushion vcarried by said base member, a pressure distributing member pivotally mounted on said base member, said pressure distributing member being provided with means for engaging with a shoe to hold the same in position on the cushion and being formed at its free end with a series of notches, a bell-crank lever pivotally mounted on said pressure distributingxmember at a point between its ends, a pair of tension springs attached at opposite sides to the base member and connected together by a bail adapted to be attached to one arm of the bellcrank lever, whereby the springs may be tensioned by rocking said lever about its pivot, and a pawl pivotally connected to one arm of the bell-crank lever and adapted to engage indifferent notches formed in the pressure distributing member dependent upon the degree to which the bell-crank lever is rocked about its pivot, whereby to maintain the springs in tensioned condition.
6. A shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a hollow base member, a flexible cushion carried by said base member, a pressure distributing member pivotally mounted on said base member, said pressure distributing member being provided with means for engaging vwith a shoe to hold the same in position on the cushion and being formed at its free end with a series of notches, a bell-crank lever pivotally mounted on said pressure distributing member at a point between its ends and being formed with a series of notches, a pair of tension springs attached at opposite sides to the base member and connected together by a bail adapted for select-ive location in any one of said notches so that the springs may be placed under dilferent degrees of tension by a uniform rocking of the bell-crank lever about its pivot, and a pawl pivotally attached to one arm of the bell-crank lever and adapted to engage in any one of the notches formed in the pressure distributing member dependent upon the degree to which the bell-crank lever is rocked about its pivot, whereby the said springs may be maintained under any set degree of tension.
7. An apparatus as set forth in claim 6, characterized by the fact that the pressure distributing member and the bell-crank lever connected therewith, and the tension springs, are adapted to swing in oppositedirections to inoperative positions, whereby the top surface of .the cushion is exposed to facilitate the application and removal of shoes.
8. A portable shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a base member, a flexible cushion carried by the base member and upon which the bottom of the shoe is adapted to rest, means includinga pressure distributing member cooperating with the shoe and having a pivotal support permitting swinging movement thereof relative to the base member, and pressure` exerting mechanism including resilient means arranged to act upon the pressure distributing member.
9. A combination as in claim 8, characterized b v the factvthat the pressure distributing means includes a plurality of shoe contacting elements adjustable toward and away from one another to permit a varied positioning of the shoe ou the cushion a-nd tocooperate with shoes of different lengths.
10. A combination as in claim 8, characterized by the fact that the pressure distributing means is provided with a plurality of shoe contacting element-s adjustable in length to vary the relationship of the pressure distri-A buting member to the cushion.
11. A portable shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a base member, a flexible cushion carried by the base member and upon which thebottom of the shoe is adapted to rest, means including a pressure distributing member cooperating with the shoe and having a pivotal support permitting swinging movement thereof relative to the base member, spring means interconnecting the base member-and the pressure distributing member, and means for adjusting the connection between the spring means and one kof said members.
12. A portable shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a base member, a flexible cushion carried by the base member and upon which the bottom of the\shoe is adapted to rest, means including a pressure distributing member cooperating with the shoe and being pivotally associated with the base member, and pressure exerting mechanism including resilient means Varranged to act upon the pressure distributing member.
13. A portable shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a base member, a flexible cushion carried by the base member and upon which the bottom of the shoe is adapted to rest, means including a pressure distributing member cooperating with the shoe and being pivotally associated with the base member, pressure exerting mechanism including resilient means arranged to act upon the pressure distributing member to cause it to press the shoe against the flexible cushion, and including also means operable to cause said resilient means to exert the desired pressure.
14. A portable shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a base member, a iexible cushion carried by the base member and upon which the bottom of the shoe is adapted to rest, means including a pressure distributing member cooperating with the shoe and being pivotally associated with the base member, and mechanism arranged to act upon the pressure distributing member to cause it to press the shoe against the flexible cushion, said mechanism including resilient means and a hand lever operable to cause said resilient means to exert' varying degrees of pressure on the shoe.
15. A portable shoe bottom attaching apparatus including, in combination, a base member, a flexible cushion carried by the base member and upon whichv the-bottom of the lshoe is adapted to rest, means including a pressure distributing member cooperating with the shoe and being pivotally associated with the base member, mechanism arranged to act upon the pressure distributing member to cause it to press the shoe against the flexible cushion, said mechanism including resilient means and a hand lever operable to cause said resilient means to exert varying degrees of pressure on the shoe, and means for lockingr the lever in set position.
