[Class 103 (iii)] In a vehicle sanding or like appliance, sand &c. is released from a container on actuation of a member releasably connected. with the brake pedal or lever the connection being such that the actuating member may be controlled by a second member independently of the brake pedal &c. As shown a sand &c. container 4, secured beneath the mudguard 5 of the rear wheel 6, has an outlet 8 normally closed by a valve 9 hinged at 11 to the container and controlled by a spring-pulled bell-crank 12, which is rigidly secured to the valve, and is connected by a cable 3 to the brake pedal 1, Fig. 1, and auxiliary operating handle 20. A guide plate 15 having a groove 16 of part-circular section is pivoted to the bottom of the container 4 and connected by a rod 14 to the valve 9. The cable 3 is detachably connected to the brake pedal 1 and is connected at 17 to a second cable 18, which passes around rollers 19 to the handle 20. In operation, a pull on the cable 3 by either control moves the bell-crank 12 from the vertical to the inclined position shown in Fig. 2, and the valve 9 and plate 15 to the positions shown in broken lines so that the groove 16 in the plate presses the sand against the tread of the wheel 6. The bell-crank spring 13 returns the parts to normal position. A second cable detachably connected to the brake pedal is provided for controlling a second container for the other rear wheel. Alternatively one container may supply sand &c. to two or more wheels. The sand &c. may be discharged under pressure from the container or may be pressed against the wheel-tread by a roller. A plunger may be mounted in the container to force out the sand &c.
