Convention date, Jan. 28. [Class 140] A thread 1, Fig. 1, is impregnated or coated with a liquid such as rubber solution or latex by drawing through a long and thin layer of the liquid which is confined in a narrow tube 5, so that the coating liquid is not carried along by the thread but acts frictionally thereon. The thread passes through a constricted neck 2 into a bulb 3 supplied with latex at 4, and draws the latex into the narrow tube 5 having a constricted outlet 6, which causes the latex to form a relatively stationary sheath surrounding the thread. The thread may be pretreated in a similar manner with a wetting liquid, e.g. water, or a rubber solvent. The thread may be coated in an apparatus comprising three bulbs 7, 8 and 9, Fig. 3, connected by narrow tubes 10 and 11 in which latex supplied at 12 under pressure circulates in opposite directions. This apparatus may be followed, as shown, by a device similar to that shown in Fig. 1, the thread being treated by a wetting liquid, e.g. water supplied to bulb 8, and then with latex supplied to bulb 3. Alternatively an impregnating liquid may be supplied to bulb 8, and a more concentrated or otherwise different impregnating liquid to bulb 3. The apparatus may be made of glass.
