[Class 96] Water is withdrawn from paper pulp &c. flowing to a regulator of consistency of that flowing to a paper-making machine, thus increasing the response of the regulator for a given fluctuation of pulp consistency. Pulp from a tank A is pumped at a' to a stuff-chest a<3> and valve N to a Fourdrinier machine, a branch supply flowing through a pipe E to a trough G with a strainer-drum H having internal scoops h<1> which remove constant quantities of water, overflow through openings h<2> returning to the interior of the drum, the thickened pulp passing to a measuring wheel J and to the regulator controlling the supply C of dilution-water, e.g. a floating roller L adjacent a constricted outflow slot K. Excess pulp overflowing from the chest a<3> and that from the trough G return to the tank A. In modifications, the valve N is replaced by a measuring- wheel ; the regulator is in the main stream of pulp to the paper-making machine; the regulator controls the amount of water removed from pulp supply to the machine instead of controlling dilution water therefor, a sievedrum of varied depth of immersion being used.
