Abstract
High molecular weight sulphur-containing plastics, obtained by reacting polysulphides and organic compounds containing at least two replaceable negative residues, are improved as regards their resistance to hydrocarbons by treating with inorganic compounds which are capable of combining with sulphur, e.g. alkali, ammonium or alkaline earth sulphides or hydrosulphides, alkali hydroxides, alkaline-reacting carbonates and alkali or alkaline earth sulphites. The reaction may be carried out in an aqueous medium, or the substances may be mixed together in a kneading machine. In examples, the following products are treated with the sulphur-combining agent, viz. (a) the products obtained by reacting a sodium polysulphide with ethylene chloride or the sodium salt of chloroethanol sulphuric acid ester in the presence of magnesium hydroxide; and (b) di-(ethylene chlorhydrin) formaldehyde acetal, b : b <1> - dichlorodiethyl ether, 1.3 - dichloro - 2 -hydroxy propane, or glycol-bis-(b -chloroethyl)-ether in the presence of barium sulphate. Rubber, lampblack, zinc oxide, mercaptobenzothiazol and stearic acid may be incorporated in the products under heat.
