Abstract

458,772. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES AND CABLES, Ltd., and WESTON, W. K., 63, Aldwych, London. June 25, 1935, No. 18170. [Class 36] Slotted insulating discs are continuously applied in spaced relation to the central conductor of a concentric cable from a magazine in such manner that relative longitudinal movement between the discs and the conductor is substantially eliminated during the period that the discs are being forced on the conductor, the latter being supported during application of the discs to prevent bending. The discs may be of a rubber composition, ebonite, polystyrol, or a synthetic resin. The slots in adjacent discs are preferably diametrically opposed. After assembly of the discs, the conductor is passed direct to apparatus for applying the outer conductor which may comprise an extruded tube or copper strips or wires bound together and, if desired, lead sheathed. A machine, Fig. 2, for assembling the discs 2 on the central conductor 1 comprises rotating magazines 3 having solts 4 into alternate ones of which discs are fed from tubes 5 by means of spring-operated, cam-controlled trigger members 10. Capstan mechanism for drawing the conductor through the machine is geared to the magazines to ensure synchronism. In a modification, Fig. 5, the spacing of the slots 4 is double that of Fig. 2, the spaces 4 between the slots being thin to pass through the slots in the discs carried by the opposing magazine: in this form, discs are fed to every slot.
