457,826. Refining and preventing oxidation of molten metals; crucibles. DAY, L. G., Arnehurst, Marsh Lane, Taplow, and MAGNESIUM CASTINGS & PRODUCTS, Ltd., 77, Buckingham Avenue, Slough, and HIGH DUTY ALLOYS, Ltd., 81, Buckingham Avenue, Slough, both in Buckinghamshire. June 7, 1935, Nos. 16637 and 16638. [Class 82 (i)] [See also Group XII] In a method of melting, refining, or preparing for casting metals and alloys which are readily subject to atmospheric attack, such as magnesium, magnesium alloys, calcium, and cerium, an inert gas is introduced into or generated within the furnace above the surface of the metal, and a gas flow is maintained outside the ladling aperture to prevent entrance of air therethrough. In the apparatus shown, sulphur dioxide is admitted through holes in a pipe 9 to the space over the molten metal in the melting pot 2, and gas burners 10, 11, 12 are placed in front of the ladling aperture 5, surmounted by a hood 13 and stack pipe 14. Other inert gases which may be used over the molten metal are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, argon, helium, neon, krypton, and xenon, and the gas stream outside the ladling aperture may be maintained otherwise than by the gas burners 10, 11, 12.
