Abstract

<PICT:0456955/III/1> <PICT:0456955/III/2> Plant for the manufacture of tarry, bituminous, and similar emulsions comprises a movable melting apparatus heated by an inner furnace which is surrounded by an oil circulation chamber immersed in the material, e.g. bitumen, to be melted and two stations, either stationary or movable, for preparing the hot emulsifying solution and for preparing the emulsion and which are heated by oil circulated from the chamber surrounding the furnace. In the arrangement shown, the furnace and its associated oil jacket heated by a masut burner 1 is placed in the tank 11 for melting the bitumen. Oil is fed via pipe 5 to heating elements in tanks 6 and 7 to heat water for the preparation of the emulsifying agent. From there it is fed via pipe 8, expansion vessel 8<1> and pump 9 to a flat coiled pipe 10 forming a false bottom in the tank 11. The pipe 10 supports the bitumen containers, and preheats them. The oil flows from pipe 10 back to the furnace. A pump, also heated by the oil circulating system, is provided to stir the bitumen in tank 11 and convey it to the emulsifying apparatus. The emulsifying agent is prepared in a mixing tank 15, from which it is fed to tank 6 where it is heated and passed to a storage tank 7 in which it is kept at the required temperature. Molten bitumen is conveyed to tank 21, heated by oil pipes 21<1>, and the emulsifying agent is fed to a similar tank 22 via pipe 20. These reagents are then withdrawn from the tanks in the desired proportions by a volumetric pump (not shown) and dispersed in a turbine 22<1> from which it is passed to a storage tank 24 located under tank 7. Pyrometers are provided to measure temperatures at various points in the plant. The tank 6 is preferably heated by the passage of oil through a number of parallel tubes immersed in the liquid, and the temperature in tank 7 is maintained by oil circulation through a flat coiled tube.
