[Class 56] Relates to apparatus for cutting a moving strip or sheet of glass in which a cutting tool is traversed automatically across the sheet along a guide. According to the invention, adjusting means are provided for so curving the guide that a rectilinear cut is made with a variable speed of traverse of the cutting tool. The apparatus is shown in plan in Fig. 2, in which a glass strip 1 is rising in contact with a roll 6, a cutting carriage 7 being movable along a guide 8 arranged transversely of the strip. The carriage 7 is moved backwards and forwards across the glass by an hydraulic cylinder 14, the piston rod of which is connected to the carriage 7 by a cable 9 passing around pulleys 10, 11. Any suitable form of drive may, however, be used instead of the hydraulic cylinder. Means are also provided for lifting the cutter out of contact with the glass at one end of the traverse, and for allowing it to return to its operative position at the other end of its traverse. The carriage is also returned automatically to its initial position after having made a cutting stroke. The guide 8, along which the carriage 7 travels, in a metal strip which is attached at intervals by bolts 25, Fig. 3, to a bar 26 supported at its ends by screwed rods 28. Hand wheels 30, screwed on to the rods 28, enable the inclination of the bar 26 and of the guide 8, to the horizontal to be adjusted. The bolts 25 are provided with nuts 32 by which the height of the guide 8 above the bar 26 can be adjusted at close intervals. By means of the adjustment, the guide 8 can be bent to any desired curve to give a cut which is accurately straight and at right angles to the length of the glass strip.
