456,787. Suction cleaners. AIR-WAY ELECTRIC APPLIANCE CORPORATION, 2101, Auburn Avenue, Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A. Nov. 9, 1935, No. 31092. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1934. [Classes 8 (i) and 8 (ii)] The rotary agitator of a vacuum cleaner comprises rubber &c. strips 71 extending radially or tangentially to the hub and shod with metal, and is driven by an independent electric motor 28, e.g. a variable-speed motor mounted directly on the suction head ; it may comprise also bristles 70 in addition to the beaters. The agitator driving belt is located in a housing separate from the motor housing, an air inlet being provided to keep the belt clean. The floor tool has a swivelling connection with the suction pipe 15, stops limiting the amount of rotation, to prevent strain on the electric conductor 110 which passes from the fan motor housing 10 around the suction pipe. The supporting wheels of the nozzle are mounted on pins of a crankshaft adjustable by a lever to control the height from the floor. The dust bag comprises an inner bag 114 of rough crÛped paper within an outer bag of impervious material pierced with perforations, and having an upper open mouth ; the portion of the inner bag exposed at this mouth may be covered by a flap of impermeable material. Rubber bumpers 135, 140 are provided on the nozzle lips and on the agitator motor ; the bumpers 135 are secured by screws and washer inserts.
