[Class 16] A holder for securing telephone and other reference books, of the kind having means for clamping the book in position so that the book can be turned through an angle of 180‹ into position for use, comprises a screw spindle arranged longitudinally of the holder and associated with a mechanism allowing co-operating pairs of jaws, which grip the book at the back, to be simultaneously operated by means of the spindle. Several holders are pivotally mounted on a central transverse rod in a desk or the like whereby each book can be independently turned about the rod and opened out on the desk for use. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the holder 1 has a single longitudinal spindle 8 with right and left hand screw-threads, and two pairs of jaws 11 are adapted to be operated on rotation of the spindle by the engagement of the studs 11b on the jaws with oblique grooves 9a in slides 9 connected to the spindle. In a further form shown in Fig. 10, the holder has a longitudinal spindle 26 with right and left hand screw-threads for operating two nuts 27 which have studs 28 passing through longitudinal slots in three superposed elongated plates. The bottom plate is fixed to the cover plate of the holder and its slot is arranged parallel to the spindle 26, but the upper plates 31, 32 are loosely mounted between the bottom plate and the nuts and are arranged to cross each other. The plates 31, 32 have the gripping-jaws 37 pivotally mounted at their extremities, and when the spindle 26 is rotated, the studs 28 travel along the slots in the three plates whereby the plates 31, 32 are moved to operate the jaws. The cover plate of the holder has transverse slots in which the jaws 37 are guided. The operating spindle may move the jaws through toggle links, and only one jaw of a pair may be movable. For preventing a heavy book from dropping when released from the jaws; coil springs which pass through transverse apertures in the back of the book are secured to the co-operating jaws.
