This invention relates to a stitching facilitating apparatusdesigned primarilyto be used in libraries, ofiices and similar establishments where binding is not practical, but it is to be understood that an apparatus, in accordance with this invention is to be employed in any connection for which it may be found applicable.
The invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth an apparatus to facilitate the operation of stitching together in volumes, such items as periodicals, pamphlets, loose sheets, etc., whereby whenxthe items are stitched they will be kept in order. and readily accessible when and where binding is not practical.
The invention further aims to provide,ina manner as hereinafter set forth, an apparatus. for-the purpose referred to which is comparatively simple in its construction and. arrangement, strong, durable, compact, readily assembled, conveniently handled, thoroughly efficient in itsuse and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement ofparts as will be more specifically set forth and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but'it is'to be understood that changes, variations and modificascope ofthe invention as claimed.

V The apparatus shown in Figures 1 to 8 is of the form which includes a manually-orhand operattions may be resorted to which fall within theed vertically movable drill, and that shown in Figures 9 and 10 a motor operated drill.
Both forms of the apparatus include a combined base and standard element II of a similar construction. The element II consists of channel shaped base I2 open at each side and a standard having lengthwise thereof a T shaped groove opening at its front and'at its top. The standard of the form shown in Figure 1 is indicated at I3 and that of the form shown in Figure 9 at It. The form of the groove in each standard is shown in Figures 6 and 8 and indicated at Ma.
The base I2 consists of a rectangular front member I5, a rectangular back member I6 and a bottom member Ill. The members I5, It seat at their lower lengthwise edges upon a suitable support notshown. The height of member I5 'is greater than that of member I5. The member I6 permanently extends above member E5. The base member I'I merges into or is connected with the rear face of member I5 and the forward face of member I6 above the lower lengthwise edges of members I5, It. The standard I3 has extending forwardly from the lower end of its forward face an extension I8 which is anchored to the rear face, flush with the lower lengthwise edge of and slightly less in height than that of the rear base member I6. The extension I8 is anchored to member I6 centrally of the rear base of the'latter. The forward 'face of member I6 directly above the bottom member I? is incut to form a square groove 20 which extends from one side to the other side of element II.
Both forms of the apparatus include a lower clamping'plate 2! which is of a size to abut the rear face of base member I5 and to be flush with the sides of element II. The upper rear marginal portion of plate 2I is rabbeted through out to form a tongue 22 and a shoulder 23. The thickness of tongue 22 is less than that of the remaining portion of plate 21. The plate H is to be removably mounted in superimposed relation with respect to the base member I1 and in abutting relation with respect to the rear face of the base member I5, and when so positioned the groove 20 and tongue 22 coast for slidably connecting base I2 and plate 2| together with the shoulder 23 abutting the forward face of base member I6. The plate 2I in proximity to shoulder 22 is provided with an elongated slot 24 which extends from a point adjacent one side to a point adjacent the other side of the plate. The end. walls of slot 24 are rounded. -The plate 2i has anchored thereto a pair of spaced aligning vertically disposed clamping screws 25 arranged forwardly of and in proximity to the ends of slot 24. Associated with the upper ends of the screws are clamping nuts 26 of the wing type. The purpose of screws 25 and nuts 26 will be presently referred to.
Both forms of apparatus include an upper clamping plate 21 corresponding in width but of less length than plate 2|. The rear portion of plate 2! is formed with a rectangular cutout 28 having its side walls 29 positioned in proximity.
to the side edges of plate 27. The forward or base wall 33 of cutout 28 is positioned between the horizontal median and rear edge of plate 27. Countersunk in the lower face of plate 21 are abutment bars 3| which extend from the front edge and aligned with the rear edge of plate 2?. The bars 3| are spaced from each other and are arranged inwardly of and spaced from the side walls 29 of the cutout 28. The distance between the bars 3| is greater than the distance between a bar and a side wall of the cutout. The bars extend across the bottom of cutout 28 and are anchored to plate 21 by the holdfast means 32. The plate 2'! is formed with a pair of spaced aligned openings 32a arranged forwardly of and in proximity to the side walls 29 of the cutout 28.
The apparatus shown by Figures 1 to 8 includes a T-shaped vertically movable slide 33 mounted in the groove Ma of the standard I3. The slide 33 has its head designated 34 and its stem 35. The latter extends forwardly from the front face of standard |3. The standard is is formed at one side with a hollow lateral extension 36 which has mounted therein and extended therefrom a spring controlled latching device 3? for releasably engaging in a pocket 38 (Figure 8) formed in a side edge of head 34 of the slide 33. The pocket 38 is arranged in slide 33 in proximity to the upper end of the latter. When the device 31' is in engagement with the wall of pocket 38 the slide 33 is latched in its upper position.
Carried by slide 33 forwardly of the latter is a hand operated drill 39 which is secured to the stem 35 by the attaching devices 40.
The apparatus shown by Figures 9 and 10 includes a T-shaped vertically movable slide 4| which is mounted in the groove Ma of the standard Id. The slide 4| has its head designated at 42 and its stem at 43. The latter extends forwardly from the front face of standard M. Secured to the front of stem 43 is an electrical motor 4% which is to be connected with a source of supply not shown. Secured to one side of the head 62 of the slide M is a laterally disposed arm $5 from which depends an angle-shaped elevating and lowering bar 56 for slide 4|. The bar 46 at its lower end is pivotally connected, as at 51, to an upstanding operating lever 48. The lower end of lever Q8 is pivotally connected, as at 59 to one side of standard M. Carried by and operated from motor 34 is a depending drill 5! The form shown by Figures 9 and 10 including a latching means 5| is of the same form and arrangement as latching means 37.
With reference to Figures 1, 2, 9, and 10 a stack 52 of items are shown in position to be acted upon by the apparatus. The stack is mounted on the lower clamping plate and positioned against the forward face of the rear member 56 of base |2. The upper clamping plate is then mounted on the stack 52, and when so mounted the screws 25 extend through the openings 32a. The nuts 26 are then engaged with the screws 25 and secured to bind against the plate 27 whereby the stack is tightly clamped between the plates 2|, 21. The lower plate 2| constitutes a sliding platform. The rear base member l6 forms a guide. By moving the plate 2| horizontally and either drill thrown into operation, the necessary number of spaced holes at the desired points may be drilled in the stack 52, for the passage of stitching or a binder to secure the items of the stack together. The slot in plate 2| and the cutout in plate 2! provide superposed clearances for the tool of the drill. After the stack has been provided with holes, the plate 2| is removed from the base, With the stack tightly clamped and while clamped between plates 2|, 21 the items of the stack are secured together by stitching. The slot in plate 2| and cutout in plate 2'! provide clearance for the stitching operation.
What I claim is:
1. In an apparatus for facilitating stitching for the purpose set forth, a channel-shaped base open at each side and including a front and a rear wall, a standard secured to the rear wall and formed with a groove opening at its front face, a controllable slide adapted to be connected to a drilling means, said slide mounted in the groove of the standard, a lower clamping plate removably mounted in the base for receiving the work to be acted upon, said plate and rear wall having oppositely disposed interengaging rabbets for slidably connecting the plate to the base, an upper clamping plate for mounting on the work, means co-acting with said plates for clamping the work between the plates, said lower plate capable of being shifted relative to the base to position successive points of the work to be acted upon by said drilling means and to remove the work from the base while clamped between the plates, and said plates being formed rearwardly of said coacting means with clearances for the drilling means.

In an apparatus for facilitating stitching for the purpose set forth, a channel-shaped base open at each side and including a front and a rear Wall, said rear wall being of greater height than said front wall, a lower clamping plate removably mounted in the base for receiving the work to be acted upon, said rear wall and lower plate having coacting means for slidably connecting said plate to the base, a standard having its lower end anchored to said rear wall and being formed with a groove opening at the front thereof, a vertically movable controllable drilling structure slidably mounted in the groove of the standard and over-hanging the base for action upon the work, an upper clamping plate for mounting on the work, means coacting with said plate for clamping the work therebetween, said lower plate capable of being shifted relative to the base to position successive points of the work to be acted upon by the drilling structure and to remove the Work while clamped between the plates from said base, said upper plate being formed in its rear edge with a U-shaped cutout, said upper plate being formed in proximity to its rear edge with an elongated slot aligning with said cutout, said cutout and slot providing clearances for said drilling means.

In an apparatus for facilitating stitching for the purpose set forth, a channel-shaped base open at each side and including a front and a rear wall, a standard secured at its lower end to said rear wall and being formed with a T-shaped groove opening at its top and at its front, a controllable vertically movable T-shaped slide mounted in said groove and adapted to carry a drilling means in overhanging relation with respect to the work to be acted upon, upper and lower plates, said plates having coacting interengaging means in proximity to their rear edges for clamping the work therebetween, said rear wall and upper plates having coacting interengaging means for slidably connecting the lower plate to the base, said lower plate capable of being shifted relative to the base to position successive points of the work to be acted upon by the drilling means and to remove the work while being clamped between the plates from said base, said upper plate having its rear edge formed with a clearance for said drilling means; and said lower plate being formed in proximity to its rear edge with a clearance for said drilling means.

An apparatus for facilitating stitching for the purpose set forth, a removable and slidably mounted lower clamping plate for receiving the work to be acted upon, said plate including upwardly extending clamping screws in proximity toits rear edge, an upper clamping plate for mounting on the work carried by the lower clamping plate and formed in proximity to its rear edge with openings for the passage of said screws, clamping nuts mounted on said screws and coacting with said upper plate for clamping the work between the plates, said lower plate being formed in proximity toits rear edge and rearwardly of said screw with an elongated slot, said upper plate having its rear edge formed with a cutout aligning with said slot, said cutout and slot providing respectively upper and lower clearances for a tool which is to operate on the work, a support forsaid lower plate, said support and lower plate having coacting means for slidably connecting the lower plate to the support, a vertically adjustable slide for the tool which is to operate on the work, a grooved standard secured to the support and in which said slide is mounted, and a latching means carried by thestandard for the slide.

Inan apparatus for facilitating stitching for the purpose set forth, a channel-shaped base open at each side and including front and rear walls, a standard secured to said rear wall and formed lengthwise thereof with a groove opening at its front'face, a lower clamping plate removably mounted within the base for receiving the work to be acted upon, said plate and rear wall having coacting interengaging means for slidably connecting said plate tothe base, a vertically movable slide for carrying a tool to operate on the work, said slide being mounted in the groove of said standard, means coacting with said plates for clamping the work therebetween, said lower plate capable of being shifted relative to the base to position successive points of the work to be acted upon by the tool and to remove the work while clamped between the plates from said base, and latching means carried by the standard for said slide. I

In an apparatus for facilitating stitching for the purpose set forth, a channel-shaped base open at each side and including front and rear walls, a standard secured to said rear wall and formed lengthwise thereof with a groove opening at its front face, a lower clamping plate removably mounted within the base for receiving the work to be acted upon, said plate and rear wall having coacting interengaging means for slidably connecting said plate to the base, a vertically movable slide for car ying a tool to operate on the work, said slide being mounted in the groove of said standard, means coacting with said plates for clamping the work therebetween, said lower plate capable of being shifted relative to the base to position successive points of the work to be acted upon by the tool and to remove the work while clamped between the plates from said base, latching means carried by the standard for said slide, and said upper plate having its rear edge out out and said lower plate being formed in proximity to its rear edge with a slot, said outout and slot forming upper'and lower clearances for the tool carried by the slide.

In an apparatus for facilitating stitching for the purpose set forth, a base including a front and rear wall, a standard secured to and extending upwardly from said rear wall, a lower clamping plate removably mounted within the base for receiving the work to be acted upon, said rear wall and plate having coacting interengaging means slidably connecting the plate to the base, a vertically movable slide connected with the standard and adapted to carry a tool for action upon the work, an upper clamping plate for mounting on the work, means in proximity to the rear edges of said plates and coacting with said plates for clamping the work between the plates, said lower plate being formed with a slot rearwardly of said clamping means, said upper clamping plate having its rear edge out out, said slot and cutout forming clearances for the tool, and said lower plate capable of being shifted relative to the base to position successive points of the workto be acted upon by said drilling means and to remove the work while clamped 7 between the plates to said base.
