Abstract

Articles of iron and iron alloys such as shipplates, pipes, and parts of pumps and containers are protected against attack by solutions containing halides, for instance sea water, or emulsions of oil in water containing halides, by first coating with a layer of an iron-antimony alloy rich in iron and then with an iron-antimony alloy rich in antimony or pure antimony or both. The first coating may comprise the alloy Fe3Sb2 and the second FeSb; further the protective layers may be applied after heating the surface to be protected above the melting point of the materials forming the layer, care being taken to prevent the formation of an oxide coating on the surface to be protected. Moreover, the protective layers may be applied by electrodeposition or by a metalspraying process. When antimony forms the final coating it may be deposited from the vapour phase.
