Abstract

455,258. Feeding sheets. EHRIG, H., 34, Otto Schmiedstrasse, and KEILHAUER, U., 4, Zum Harfenacker, both in Leipsic, Germany. Dec. 20, 1935, No. 35381. [Class 100 (i)] Sheets are fed from a pile S to printing &c, machines by means of two sets of suction nozzles 10, 20 which move over different paths c, e indicated diagrammatically in Fig. 3, the sheets being transferred to the nozzles 20 at the intersecting position i and finally being transferred to a conveying device which is driven at different speeds according as it is desired to advance the sheets in an overlapping stream feed or to advance them one behind the other in spaced relation. The separating nozzles 10, 10<1> are carried by levers 11 which are given combined rising and falling and oscillating movements by means of rods 12 which are reciprocated by cams on a shaft 20, and levers 13 which are oscillated about pins 3a by cams on the same shaft 20 driven from the main shaft 80. The path of the nozzles 10 is indicated by the arrows c<1>, c<2>, Fig. 3, and in addition when these nozzles rest on the front of the pile the nozzles are turned about their rear edges r, so as to bend the front edge of the sheet, by means of suction-operated pistons 5i in cylinders 15, Fig. 10, arranged in the same air circuit as the separators. The pistons operate link-and-lever systems 17, 18, 19 which in conjunction with curved slots 16 at the upper ends of the levers 11 cause the nozzles 10, 10<1> to bend the sheet before it is moved from the pile. Blasts of air from nozzles p assist the separation of the sheets. The forwarding suction devices 20, 21, 22 engage the underside of the separated sheet at the position i, Fig. 3, the outer set 20, 20<1> being moved laterally outwards to straighten the sheet before it is brought into contact with the inner nozzles 21, 22<1>, 22, 22<1>. The nozzles 20 are moved outwards by pistons 5n in cylinders 25, Fig. 13, when the nozzles are closed by the sheet. The nozzles 20, 21, 22 are carried by oscillating levers 27 and cranked levers 28, operated by cams formed in discs 29, 291 on the shaft 70. The sheets are conveyed to the printing-machine by means of rollers and belts 30, 35 of known form driven at variable speed from the shaft 20 by means of elliptical gears 51, 53, or 41, 43. One set of elliptical gears is clutched to the shaft 70 by means of a clutch 71, or 72, the clutches being operated by levers from a common rod 75 which puts one clutch in gear and throws the other clutch out of gear so as to change from a stream feed to a feed of single sheets in spaced relation. This mechanism may be controlled by self-acting electromagnetic mechanism to stop the conveyer in the event of a misfeed, and forms the subject-matter of Specification 455,265.
