Abstract

Thio-ethers containing a carboxyl or ester substituent are prepared from ethyl crotonate, phthalate or benzoate or methyl salicylate by mixing thionyl chloride with the ester and slowly adding copper dust. After standing on a water bath, the mixture is extracted with hot chloroform. The extract is filtered to remove precipitated sulphur and the filtrate is crystallized. Thionyl chloride may be replaced by sulphur mono- or di-chloride. Methylsalicylate treated in this manner yields bis-(3-carbmethoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)-thioether.ALSO:Lubricating-composi tions for use under high pressures consist of a lubricating oil or grease and a small amount of a thio-ether containing both a hydroxy and a carboxyl or ester substituent. Preferably ethers containing one or more aryl groups are used in which the hydroxy group is in the para-position. Example, 50g. of thionyl chloride are mixed with 30g. of methyl salicylate, and 20g. of copper dust are slowly added. After standing, the mixture is heated on a water bath and extracted with hot chloroform. The extract is filtered to remove sulphur and the filtrate is crystallized to produce bis-(3 - carbmethoxy 4-hydroxy phenyl) thio-ether <FORM:0455235/III/1> Thionyl chloride may be replaced by sulphur mono- or di-chloride. Up to 2 per cent of this compound is dispersed in the lubricating oil or grease. Similar thio-ethers may be prepared from ethyl benzoate, phthalate or crotonate.
