Abstract
Pigment compositions are prepared by treating a solution of a phthalocyanine dye with an aqueous dispersion or solution containing a substratum or an agent capable of forming a substratum by action with the dye solvent, the process being carried out if desired in the presence of a dispersing or emulsifying agent while heating. Substrata specified are barium sulphate, kieselguhr, silica gel (stable to acids) and suspended pigment dyes (stable to acids). When a pigment dye serving as substratum is soluble in the phthalocyanine dye solvent, the two may be co-precipitated from this solvent. Barium chloride is instanced as an agent capable of forming a substratum with the dye-solvent sulphuric acid. Specified dispersing agents are the water soluble reaction products of ethylene oxide with alcohols, carboxylic acids and amines of high molecular weight, the polymerization products of ethylene oxide itself, the amide derived from oleic acid and methylamino-ethanolsulphonic acid, sulphite cellulose waste liquor, alkylated naphthalene sulphonic acids and their salts. In examples: (1) the phthalocyanine dye obtained according to example 1 of Specification 453,767, is dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid and stirred into a solution of barium chloride and oleic amide of methylaminoethane sulphonic acid in water; a suspension of barium sulphate may replace the barium chloride solution; (2) the pigment prepared by heating o-phthalodinitrile in phthalic acid diethyl ester with cuprous chloride is dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid and poured into an aqueous suspension of kieselguhr containing the water soluble reaction product of ethylene oxide and octadecyl alcohol; (3) the pigment prepared by heating o-phthalodinitrile with cuprous chloride or cuprous bromide is dissolved in chlorsulphonic acid and stirred into a suspension of 10 parts of silica gel containing the water-soluble reaction product of ethylene oxide with octodecyl alcohol; chlorsulphonic acid may be replaced by trichloracetic acid as solvent for the pigment, in which case it is preferable to heat; (4) the pigment obtained by heating a mixture of o-phthalodinitrile, pyridine and cuprous bromide is dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid and stirred into an aqueous suspension of the azo dye 4-chloro-2-nitraniline --> acetoacetyl-o-chloranilide containing the ethylene-oxide-octodecyl alcohol reaction product; a green composition is obtained.
