Abstract

454,822. Respiratory appliances ; valves. SOC. ANON. DES GAZ INDUSTRIELS S. O. G. A. Z., 30, Avenue Rittweger, Brussels. Dec. 31, 1935, Nos. 36089 and 36090. Convention dates, Feb. 23 and Nov. 9. [Class 81 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] In respiratory appliances comprising an oxygen cylinder 7 and a reducing valve 8 connected through a conduit 11 with a manifold 5 the branches of which are connected respectively to the face-piece through a filter canister, directly to the face-piece, and to a breathing bag, a valve 27 is provided in the conduit 11 which cuts off the oxygen supply on excessive inrease of pressure in the breathing bag. The valve 27 comprises a plug having a slot 33 for passage of gas and is displaceable to uncover the slot by a spring 31. The plug passes through a guide 28, screwed into boss 29 with a casing S, and has a tapered end engaging a recess 26 in a disc 25 displaceable to close the slot 33 by a diaphragm 15 acting through lazy-tongs mechanism 19 .. 23 on rise of pressure in the breathing bag transmitted through the manifold 5 and a conduit 14. The lazy-tongs mechanism comprises links 19, 20, pivoted to a part 17 attached to the diaphragm 15 and to levers 21, 22, turning about a common fixed pivot 23 and bearing against the disc 25 which is guided by an integral rib 30 having a slot through which the pivot 23 passes. The diaphragm 15 is held by a screw plug 15 and pressed by a spring 16. In a modification means are provided for opening the valve 27 in emergency such means comprising a lever pivoted to an extension of the casing S and bearing on a plug connected to the diaphragm 15 and extending through the screw plug 15<1> whereby operation of the lever forces in the diaphragm and uncovers the slot 33. The casing extension has a stop preventing outward movement of the lever and the lever engages the diaphragm plug through an adjustable screw. The conduit 11 is detachably connected to the reducing valve 8 as by a bayonet joint fitting or by a screw ring 12 having a milled edge. A cock 32 is provided to exclude atmospheric gases when charging the cylinder and reducing valve. The reducing valve 8 may be of the kind which closes on excessive increase in back pressure, and may comprise a spring-loaded two diameter plug the two faces of which are connected by a duct 42, the lift being controllable by a screw with a milled head 9.
