Abstract

719,025. Fluid-actuated valves. GARRETT CORPORATION. Jan. 21, 1953 [Jan. 28, 1952], No. 1735/53. Class 135. [Also in Group VI] In the demand valve of an underwater respiratory appliance the exhalation valve is mounted on the diaphragm and the inhalation valve is actuated through floating levers engaging the periphery of the diaphragm. Gas or air from a cylinder 16 passes through a filter 25 to the control valve 39 which is held on its seat by a spring 43. A plate member 34, around the valve stem, carries an upstanding. rim 49 which serves as a pivot for three levers 47, the upper ends of which bear on the underside of the diaphragm 13. The upper side of the diaphragm is exposed to the ambient fluid medium through holes 58 in the cover 12. Any reduction in the pressure in chamber 15, which is connected to the breathing mask through a tube 61, below the ambient pressure causes the diaphragm to open the demand valve by means of levers 47 bearing on the head 41 on the valve stem and thus the oxygen breathed is always at the pressure of the surroundings. The outer face of the diaphragm carries a flexible valve member 53 which normally closes ports 56 but, on exhalation, the slightly increased pressure in the chamber 15 thrusts the diaphragm outwards until the centre 54, of valve member 53, abuts against the stop 57 and thereafter lifts the valve member away from the ports 56 to allow the exhaled air to escape.
