Abstract
<PICT:0454795/III/1> <PICT:0454795/III/2> An apparatus for producing mottled effects on tiles or the like comprises a tool capable of dabbing colour on to the surface of the tiles, and means for moving the tool to and from the tiles, and also for swinging it from side to side, in order to vary the position of contact with the tiles as they are carried along by a conveyer. The tool 23 is attached to an arm 20, Fig. 1, which is pivoted by a bolt 35 to a member 36 secured to a bracket 18 mounted on an horizontal shaft 17. A rotating cam 13 is formed with teeth 14 which engage the free end of the bracket 18 and rock it in a vertical plane, so that the tool carried by the arm 20 is moved to and from the tiles as they are carried along by a conveyer 37. The horizontal shaft 11 on which the cam 13 is secured also carries at one end a cam 15, Fig. 2, which rocks an arm 30 in a direction transverse to the movement of the bracket 18. The arm 30 is connected to a rod 32 which is attached to the arm 20 at 34, so that the cam 15 causes the arm 20 to swing and move the tool from side to side over the tiles on the conveyer 37. The cams may be shaped to impart either regular or irregular movements to the tool. In a modification, the tiles may be held face downwards between grips and the cams may be arranged to lift the tool into contact with the tiles. The tool 23 comprises a container 23<1> and a pad 27 of loofah, sponge, or the like fitted into or over an aperture in the outlet in the container. Colour flows from a reservoir 39 through a flexible pipe 38 to the interior of the container 23.
