[Class 112] In a zigzag chain-stitch sewing-machine, the needle-bar gate is vibrated by a double armed lever mounted on a vertical shaft, operated by a cam driven by a pair of helical wheels and operating also the looper. The main shaft 1 reciprocates the needle-bar and looper 3 in unison in the usual manner. The needle-bar gate 4 is oscillated about the shaft 5 by a rod 24 connected to a double armed lever 11 with a follower 37 following a track in the cam 6 and rocking on a vertical shaft 13. The cam 10 is driven from the main shaft 1 by a pair of helical wheels 9, 10. The other arm of the lever 11 is attached to a short rod 15 which rocks a bellcrank lever 16 about its pivot 17. This gives the looper 3 its sidewise movement to follow the lateral vibrations of the needle through a link 18, lever 21 and rod 22. The wheel 10 may be made of compressed fabric for silent running. By suitably arranging the shape of the cam track 6, different styles of stitching as shown in Fig. 9 can be produced. Throat plate.
