[Class 6 (ii)] A hand-carried powerdriven clipper comprises a rotary-blade cutter of high-speed impact type and a pronged guard plate mounted at the back of the cutter and formed in parts which are detachable from one another and are complementary in the sense that the prongs, as regards their number, are distributed between them, so that the clipper may be adapted for cutting hedges or grass. The clipper may comprise an electric motor 1 with a balanced two-bladed cutter 2 removably connected to its shaft through a slipping clutch. A dished guard plate detachably connected to the motor behind the cutter 2 is provided with prongs or teeth for guiding the twigs &c. into the path of the cutting edges of the cutter, which cutting edges sweep over an area radially beyond the periphery of the guard plate. This guard plate is composed of two complementary parts 3, 4, which are interchangeable with similar parts having different arrangements of prongs. The part 3 is used alone for grass cutting and may have three front prongs 7, Fig. 2, six rear prongs 8, and two pairs of side prongs 9, 10. Some of the rear prongs 8 form downwardly turned hooks to protect the cutter as it is drawn backwards. For hedge cutting the complementary annular part 4 having teeth 11, 13, 14, 15 is bolted on the part 3. The crosssection of the dished guard plates is such that there is a minimum of area around the edge lying in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of rotation of the cutter. In order that the tool may be used for trimming lawn edges, the handle socket may be connected to the motor casing by a universally adjustable mounting comprising a clamping strap 20, Fig. 6, having a yoke 23 engaging the socket 26 and pivotally and adjustably connected to the strap by fixing bolts 24 and nuts 25. The handle may be short or long, and may be sectional. For lawn cutting and trimming, an auxiliary guard plate 27 may be detachably mounted below the cutter and opposite its central part, at a distance corresponding to the length of grass to be left uncut. This plate may be carried by a U-shaped lug 28 on the dished guard plate. For edge trimming, a shoe 29, Fig. 7, may be provided to push aside stones &c. According to the Provisional Specification a one-piece guard plate may be used.
