Abstract

453,648. Decorative compound sheet materials; plaster boards. TYCE, G. C., Norton Hall, The Green, Norton-on-Tees, and LEFEBURE, V., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Feb. 14, 1935, No. 4828. [Classes 96 and 140] [See also Group X] Decorative fibrous sheet material is made by superimposing a sheet of resin-impregnated paper upon a layer of unimpregnated decorative or printed paper, cloth or similar fabric material, backing the lower layer with a sheet of unimpregnated absorbent paper and treating the whole under heat and pressure so that the resin is caused to flow through and cement the layers together, the heat and pressure treatment being so controlled that impregnation is complete throughout the upper layers but the resin only partially penetrates the under layer of absorbent paper. In a modification, the top layer of paper is not impregnated with resin but the resin is applied thereto, allowed to dry if necessary and the whole treated under heat and pressure. Pigments or the like may be incorporated in the top layer of paper or in the resin applied thereto. Suitable resins are urea formaldehyde, thiourea formaldehyde, phenol formaldehyde, methyl methacrylate, styrene or paralac resin. Plaster board or panels may be formed by covering a layer of plaster on both surfaces with pulp board or like lining, one or both of these linings having an external layer or layers of the decorative sheet material bonded thereto preferably by a water-proof adhesive.
