Abstract

452,814. Toothed gearing. SYKES, W. E., 33, Park Lane Apartments, Gates Circle, Buffalo, New York, U.S.A. June 27, 1935, No. 18428. Convention date, June 28, 1934. [Class 80 (i)] [See also Group II] The tooth faces are surfacehardened at H over part of their length, but are left tough at G, J to prevent chipping. As shown, applied to a herringbone gear, the tough parts occur at the apices and at the ends of the teeth. The hardening is performed by an oxyacetylene torch, the flame of which is surrounded or nearly surrounded by a spray of water.
