Abstract

A mineral oil composition readily emulsifiable with water comprises a hydroformed mineral oil and an emulsifier. The mineral oil is preferably a lubricating oil containing appreciable quantities of naphthenic hydrocarbons and is hydroformed by destructive hydrogenation at temperatures of 460--540 DEG C. under a pressure above 20 atmospheres, for a limited time, the boiling range being substantially unaltered. Thus, the oil is passed with free hydrogen or gases containing free hydrogen over suitable catalysts under a pressure of about 250 atmospheres at a temperature of 460--540 DEG C., the amount of hydrogen being about 2000 cubic metres per ton of oil and the rate of feed being about \ba1/2\be volume of oil per volume of catalyst reaction space per hour. Suitable catalysts comprise the oxides and sulphides of metals of the sixth group of the periodic system, if desired with alkaline earth oxides as promoters. The hydroformed oil, preferably freed from wax, is mixed with, e.g. 5 per cent of an emulsifier such as a purified, oil-soluble sulphonate. Other specified emulsifiers are ethanolamines, ethylene glycols, and soaps therefrom. Other petroleum oils, fatty oils, oil waxes, vegetable oils--blown or otherwise--vegetable oil soaps and fatty oil soaps may be included. The water-soluble compositions are suitable for the treatment of textile fibres or fabrics, as machinery lubricants, mould dressings, cutting oils, polishes, plasticizing agents, softeners for the treatment of rubber latex and as a constituent of coal sprays, insecticides and fungicides; and when containing an anti-oxidant as first preventatives. A composition comprising hydroformed mineral oil with triethanolamine oleate and oil-soluble sulphonates readily emulsifies with water to form an emulsion suitable for spraying p loose wool fibres prior to picking and carding. Specification 261,039, [Class 91], is referred to.ALSO:A mineral oil composition readily emulsifiable with water comprises a hydroformed mineral oil and an emulsifier.
