Abstract

452,707. Electric welding. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. May 18, 1936, No. 14079. Convention date, May 21, 1935. [Class 83 (iv)] In an automatic process of electric flash welding, in which the parts are pressed together by a spring and the welding current cut-off when a definite upset pressure is reached, the work is then subjected to further heating so that the spring upsets it to more accurate final dimensions. The further heating may be effected by switching on a second current after a cooling interval by use of a time delay relay or switch responsive to the maximum pressure of the upset drive and cutting out of the welding switch. The final dimensions may be determined by the movable pair of jaws engaging either an adjustable stop so as to cut off the second current and if desired also the upset drive, or a switch for operating a motor for opening at least one of the pairs of jaws. It is stated that a mechanically, electrically or hydraulically worked upset device may be used in addition to or instead of a spring.
