Abstract

<PICT:0452618/III/1> <PICT:0452618/III/2> An apparatus for treating coated surfaces, particularly patent leather, with ultra-violet radiation comprises a conveyer by which the work is passed in an arcuate path of more than 180 DEG around a lamp. The conveyer 40 is in the form of a wire mesh belt 42 secured to chains 44 passing round sprocket wheels 46 and a larger wheel 58 by which the chains are guided to carry the belt round a lamp 10. The shafts of the wheels 46 are driven by gearing from an electric motor. The work to be treated is held in place on the belt by suction from a suction chamber 110, an opening in which is closed by the belt. Conveyers 130, 160 are provided for feeding the work to and from the machine. Reflecting surfaces 190, 192 are provided as shown in Fig. 4. The lamp employed is arranged horizontally and is of the induction mercury-argon type with a quartz tube. A cooling coil 11 is arranged at one end of the lamp and it is enclosed in a quartz envelope 12 open at each end and surrounded by a coiled copper tube 14 of long elliptical section which is energized from a high-frequency source to serve as an inductor element. Water is circulated through this tube for cooling purposes.
