[Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] [See also Group XXXII] A cup packing 15 for pistons, reciprocating rods or rotary shafts is pressed on to its supporting surface by fluid pressure acting on a movable disc member 17 supported by a spring. The packing is shown as applied to the piston of a shock absorber. On the up-stroke of the piston 5, due to compression of car body springs, liquid passes from a chamber 10 through passages 11, 12 and a valve 14 into a chamber 6. During the return stroke the liquid is compressed in chamber 6 until the spring- loaded valve 7 lifts and permits return flow of liquid through a passage 9 into chamber 10.
