Abstract

451,409. Welding metallic tips to pen nibs and other metallic bases. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Pfanstiehl Chemical Co. ; Waukegan, Illinois, U.S.A.) Dec. 29, 1934, No. 12337/36. Divided out of 452,861 under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 15, 1935. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [See also Group XI] In a method of welding a tip to a metallic base the tip is first tacked to the base, providing poor heat conductivity between tip and base, and subsequently metal adjacent to the tack is fused whereby the tip is welded to the base. The nib is carried by a holder 13, Fig. 4, provided with copper jaws 12, and a stop collar 26 which serves for both tacking and welding. The former operation, carried out in apparatus, Fig. 1, comprises a stand 15, 17 for the hard metal tip 11 a sleeve 14 for the holder to slide vertically in and connections which provide for an electrical discharge through the nib and tip when the contacts 24 are momentarily connected by the collar 26 passing the projection 25, as the former falls in the sleeve to connect the nib and tip. The welding apparatus, Fig. 3, comprises a glass chamber 30, which may be made of the glass known under the Registered Trade Mark " Pyrex," set in a frame and adapted to be supplied with hydrogen' or other readily ionizable gas through the tube 31. A filament or filaments 29 are provided within the glass chamber and are so connected with an electric supply that an arc is formed to embrace the tip and nib to weld these together, the metal of the nib may fuse and surround the tip without the latter fusing or the tip may be fused as well as the nib in which case, a spherical tip is formed at the end of the nib. The electrical connections for the welding operation may comprise filaments 29, Fig. 7, which are heated by a low voltage high current supply from transformers 45 and across which an arc is struck which embraces the tip, the current supply of the arc being delivered by a transformer 44 which is provided with a magnetic shunt 47. Alternately three filaments connected to three phase supply lines or a single filament with the tip and nib forming the other electrode may be used.
